1. Agreement

By downloading or using Balm you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the app. If you obtained Balm from the App Store, Apple's Licensed Application End User Licence Agreement also applies, and where it conflicts with these terms, Apple's terms govern.

2. Your licence

We grant you a personal, non-transferable, non-exclusive licence to use Balm on Apple devices you own or control, as permitted by the App Store Terms of Service. You may not copy, sell, sublicence, reverse-engineer or attempt to extract the source of the app, except where that restriction is prohibited by law.

3. What Balm is not

Balm is a book of affirmations, not care. It is not therapy, not counselling, not medical or psychiatric treatment, and not a crisis service. It does not know how you are. It cannot tell whether today's line has landed well or badly, and it will keep arriving either way.

Nothing in Balm is medical or mental-health advice, and it is not a substitute for the judgement of a doctor, therapist, midwife, counsellor or any other qualified professional. Do not delay seeking help, and do not stop a treatment or a medication, on the strength of anything Balm says.
Balm is not a crisis service and cannot respond to you. If you are in danger, or thinking about harming yourself, contact your local emergency number or a crisis line now. findahelpline.com lists free, confidential lines by country.
Words for a hard season can still land badly on a hard day. Balm lets you set how gently or how bravely it speaks, change your situation whenever life changes, and turn the reminders down or off entirely. If Balm is not helping, those controls are in Settings, and you are not obliged to keep it.
Reminders are not a health reminder system. Balm is not for prescribing, appointments, or anything you need to be told about reliably.

Balm is written for adults, about circumstances that are sometimes serious. You are responsible for deciding whether it is right for you at the moment you are in.

4. The words themselves

Balm's affirmations are written and curated by people rather than generated on demand, and they belong to us. Read them, save them, put them on your lock screen, and share an individual line the way you would quote anything. You may not copy the library or any substantial part of it, republish it, or use it to build or train another product.

Wallpapers you make in Balm are yours to keep, post and send.

5. Free, and subscribed

Balm's free tier is a working app rather than a trial. Without paying anything you keep the situation you chose, a set of lines from it every day, a canvas to read them on, room to save the ones you want to come back to, and a widget on your lock screen. Nothing expires.

A subscription opens the rest: every situation, so you can switch when your circumstances do, the whole library unmetered, every topic, every canvas, and reminders as often as you want them. The exact limits on the free tier are shown in the app and may change, with one exception we intend to hold to: the widget is never switched off. A reader who does not pay still gets a line a day on their lock screen, indefinitely.

Payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation of purchase.
A subscription renews automatically unless it is cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your account is charged for renewal within 24 hours of the end of that period.
You can manage and cancel subscriptions in your Apple Account settings. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
Any free trial period is forfeited if you subscribe to the same product before the trial ends.
Prices vary by region and may change. Any change to an existing subscription is notified in advance, as Apple requires.
Refunds are handled by Apple, not by us, under the App Store terms.
If a subscription lapses, Balm returns you to the free tier. It does not lock you out of the app or hide what you had already saved.

6. Widgets, notifications and the watch

Widgets and notifications are delivered by iOS, on iOS's schedule, within limits iOS sets and can change. Balm asks for the updates you have configured; it cannot guarantee that every one arrives, arrives on time, or arrives at all if your device is off, out of battery, in a Focus mode, or low on the background time iOS allots. Treat a missed line as a missed line and nothing more.

7. Your data

Balm has no account and no server. Everything you tell it is stored on your own device, which means you are the only copy: if you delete the app, lose the phone or move to a new one, what you had saved is gone and we cannot restore it. The Privacy Policy explains this in full.

8. Acceptable use

Use Balm for yourself. Do not use it to harass, pressure or diagnose anyone else, do not present its words as professional advice to another person, and do not use it for any unlawful purpose.

9. No warranty

Balm is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the app will be uninterrupted or error-free, that any particular line will be suitable for you, or that reminders will be delivered.

10. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, or for any loss of data, lost saved lines, missed reminders, lost profits or lost time, arising from your use of or inability to use Balm. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the amount you paid for Balm in the twelve months before the claim.

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions, so parts of this section may not apply to you. Nothing here affects your statutory rights as a consumer where you live.

11. Changes to the app and to these terms

We may change, suspend or discontinue features. If we change these terms materially, the date at the top of this page changes and the updated terms are published here. Continuing to use Balm after that means you accept them.
